Chapter 2 - The Siren Across the Atlantic Chop

The wail of the harbor siren shattered the rhythm of the jazz quartet.
Conversations died one by one. The high-society guests holding their crystal flutes crowded toward the starboard mahogany rail, shielding their eyes against the glare of the afternoon sun reflecting off the choppy Atlantic waters.
A sleek, forty-foot Harbor Police tactical launch was cutting through the wake at top speed, twin blue emergency strobes flashing against the white fiberglass hull of the Richardson yacht, The Golden Sovereign.
Charles Richardson dropped his cigar into a crystal ashtray, scowling as he walked toward the bridge companionway. “What is the Coast Guard doing out here? Captain Miller! Did you forget to file our harbor clearance manifest again?”
The vessel’s hired captain didn't answer from the bridge. He had already killed the yacht’s twin diesel engines.
The hum of the propellers died out, leaving only the sound of water slapping against the hull.
The police vessel pulled alongside, rubber fenders groaning as lines were tossed and secured by two armed marine patrol officers. The yacht’s deckhands stepped back immediately, raising their hands in deference.
Charles leaned over the railing, his face flushed red with indignation. “Officers! What is the meaning of this intrusion? I am Charles Richardson, Chairman of Hawthorne Leisure! We are hosting a private gathering!”
The first person who stepped across the boarding ramp was not a police officer.
It was Kira Marquez, Chief Legal Officer of Sovereign Asset Recovery and Senior Managing Director of Vantage Capital. She wore a tailored navy wool suit that whipped in the coastal wind, dark sunglasses, and carried a reinforced titanium briefcase under one arm. In her right hand, she held a handheld marine loudhailer.
She stepped onto the teak deck with the unmistakable, crushing poise of a litigator who owned every square foot of the harbor.
Kira didn't look at Charles. She didn't look at Eleanor, whose mouth hung open in frozen shock. She didn't glance at Julian, who had finally scrambled up from his lounge chair.
She walked straight past the ice sculptures, straight past the champagne tower, and stopped two paces in front of my soaked, olive-stained dress.

She clicked off the megaphone, opened her leather portfolio with a sharp metallic snap, and bowed her head with crisp, military respect.
“Madam President,” Kira spoke, her voice carrying clear across the silent deck. “The foreclosure warrants and emergency seizure orders have been signed by the federal magistrate. Sovereign Trust and Vantage Capital have officially taken possession of this vessel.”
