Chapter 9 - THE NIGHT I LEFT

I left the house three days later.

Not because Graham ordered me out.

Not because I was afraid to face him.

Because I needed space.

Safety.

And a home where I could prepare for my daughter's birth without waiting for another lie.

I moved into a small furnished house near my sister in Westport.

My attorney arranged temporary financial protections.

My obstetrician knew about the stress and encouraged me to prioritize rest and medical follow-up.

I began sleeping better.

Not immediately.

But gradually.

The first night, I woke at two in the morning expecting Graham to come home.

Then I remembered.

He wasn't coming.

I cried.

Not because I wanted him back.

Because nine years of marriage didn't disappear simply because the truth had become unbearable.

I missed the man I thought I'd married.

The man who used to bring me coffee.

Who danced with me in the kitchen.

Who cried when we first saw our daughter's heartbeat.

But that man had made choices.

And those choices had consequences.

One afternoon, my sister found me sitting beside a box of baby clothes.

“You okay?”

I laughed through tears.

“No.”

She sat beside me.

“Want to talk?”

I shook my head.

May you like

Then leaned against her shoulder.

For the first time in months, I didn't have to pretend I was fine.
