Chapter 8 - THE DINNER PARTY THAT NEVER HAPPENED

Graham planned a dinner party for Saturday.
Twelve guests.
Business associates.
Two members of the Bennett Maritime board.
And a representative from Halcyon Capital.
He told me it would be good for our marriage to appear united.
I stared at him.
“Appear?”
He hesitated.
“You know what I mean.”
I did.
He wanted a photograph.
A smiling pregnant wife beside her successful husband.
Proof that everything was normal.
Proof that I supported him.
I agreed to attend.
Not because I trusted him.
Because my attorney had already arranged for the board members to receive formal notice of the disputed documents.
The dinner began at seven.
Graham stood beside me in the foyer.
His hand rested on my back.
I wanted to step away.
But I waited.
At seven thirty, his phone began vibrating.
He ignored it.
Then it rang again.
And again.
His smile tightened.
Finally, he stepped into the hallway.
I watched him answer.
His face changed.
He turned toward me.
“What did you do?”
The room fell silent.
I looked at him.
“What happened?”
He stared.
“The board has suspended the transaction.”
I smiled faintly.
“Then I suppose they read the documents.”
His face went pale.
The guests exchanged uneasy glances.
Graham lowered his voice.
“You embarrassed me.”
I looked at him.
“No.”
May you like
I rested one hand on my stomach.
“You did that yourself.”
