Chapter 13 - THE COMPANY MY FATHER BUILT

Six months after Evelyn's birth, I returned to Bennett Maritime.

Not as a ceremonial shareholder.

Not as Graham Whitmore's wife.

As Madeline Bennett Whitmore, the daughter of the man who founded the company.

I met with the board.

Reviewed financial reports.

Spoke with employees.

And began rebuilding the governance structures that had allowed Graham's scheme to develop.

I hired independent auditors.

Strengthened approval requirements.

And created clear policies for conflicts of interest.

Some people questioned whether I could manage a company while raising a baby.

I smiled.

Then asked whether they had the same concerns about fathers.

The room became very quiet.

I didn't pretend I knew everything.

I hired experienced professionals.

Asked questions.

And listened.

My father had taught me that leadership wasn't about being the loudest person in the room.

It was about knowing what mattered.

And having the courage to protect it.
