Chapter 5 - The Safe in the Master Bedroom

At 11:15 PM, four marked cruisers from the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office and two unmarked tactical SUVs pulled up to the iron gates of the Radford Ranch.
Searchlights illuminated the peeling white fences, the rusted barns, and the darkened two-story farmhouse.
Brock stepped onto the porch in his boots, holding a glass of whiskey, glaring at the flashing strobe lights.
“What is the meaning of this?!” Brock shouted, stepping off the porch. “This is private property! Officer, tell your men to leave!”
Detective Marcus Vance walked up the gravel walkway, displaying an unsealed, signed search warrant issued by Judge Eleanor Sterling.
“Brock Radford, we have a warrant to search this residence, all outbuildings, private safes, and electronic data storage devices in connection with an active felony investigation,” Detective Vance announced.
Brock’s face turned an ugly shade of pale. “You can't search my house! My mother brought you here! She’s delirious!”
“Step aside, Mr. Radford,” Detective Vance commanded.
Eight tactical officers breached the front door.
Inside the master bedroom, officers forced open the heavy fireproof safe behind the closet panel.
The evidence recovered was overwhelming:
The original life insurance policy for $2,000,000 on Natasha.
The forged power-of-attorney documents containing fraudulent notarization stamps.
Sixty unopened letters from Clara Jenkins in Omaha, along with baby photographs Natasha had left behind.
A hidden drawer containing vials of concentrated veterinary sedatives that Brock had been slipping into Natasha’s water to keep her compliant.
And $85,000 in cash bundles siphoned from the ranch's payroll reserves.

Detective Vance picked up the vial of veterinary sedatives, his eyes flashing with disgust.
“Bag and tag every millimeter of this room,” Detective Vance ordered. “We have an active premeditated homicide conspiracy.”
