Chapter 4 - The Two-Million-Dollar Policy

While Detective Vance prepared the emergency search warrants, Julian Montgomery delved deeper into the financial records of the Radford Ranch.
What he uncovered transformed a domestic abuse case into a monstrous, premeditated capital crime.
“Henrietta, look at this,” Julian said, laying three certified underwriting certificates onto the conference table.
Displayed before me was an unrestricted, high-yield term life insurance policy:
Insured Party: Natasha Radford.
Underwriting Date: October 14 of last year.
Coverage Amount: $2,000,000.
Primary Beneficiary: Brock Radford.
Rider Clause: Double indemnity payout ($4,000,000) in the event of accidental death or agricultural machinery failure on the ranch premises.
My blood ran cold as ice.
“Brock didn't just neglect her,” I whispered, horrified. “He was planning to kill her.”
“Look at the medical exclusion clauses,” Julian pointed out, his finger tracing the fine print. “The policy explicitly denies coverage for pre-existing conditions, but guarantees full payout if the insured suffers accidental hypothermia, acute dehydration, or falls from an agricultural structure.”
“He locked her in the coop during the cold autumn nights,” I realized, the horrifying puzzle pieces locking together. “He starved her so she would become disoriented, and then he was going to stage an 'unfortunate accident' in the grain silo to collect four million dollars.”
“And the debt he threatened you with?” Julian added with a grim smile. “Brock forged your late husband’s corporate seal to take out a $400,000 personal line of credit. He listed Natasha as the primary debtor using a forged power of attorney. He was going to wipe out the debt with the insurance payout and flee to Costa Rica with his mistress.”
“His mistress?”
Julian slid a photograph across the table. It showed Brock standing on a yacht in Miami three weeks ago, wrapping his arm around a young woman wearing diamond jewelry purchased with the ranch’s operating funds.
I looked at the photograph of the boy I had given birth to.
The son I had loved was dead.

In his place stood a predatory monster who had gambled his soul for greed.
“Detective Vance,” I said, turning to the investigator. “Execute the raid.”
