Chapter 7 - THE SCARS SHE NEVER WANTED HIM TO SEE

I left the restaurant immediately.
Not because Victor told me to.
Because I finally understood that staying would put Noah in danger.
I called the police.
Then contacted a lawyer Ruth recommended.
The lawyer advised me to preserve the memory card and avoid confronting anyone involved.
But before I could leave the building, Jack Moretti appeared near the back entrance.
“Lily.”
I froze.
He studied my face.
“What happened?”
I shook my head.
“Nothing.”
He looked toward the restaurant.
“Victor?”
I swallowed.
Jack's expression hardened.
“Did he threaten you?”
I hesitated.
Then nodded.
“Yes.”
Jack looked at me.
“Tell me.”
I took a breath.
And told him everything.
The robot.
The memory card.
Ethan.
Victor.
The shipping documents.
Jack listened.
When I finished, his expression had changed.
Not anger at me.
Something colder.
He looked toward the restaurant.
Then said, “You need to give those files to the authorities.”
I nodded.
“I already contacted a lawyer.”
Jack looked back at me.
“Good.”
I swallowed.
Then whispered, “Are you involved?”
He stared.
For several seconds, he said nothing.
Then answered.
“Some of those shipments passed through companies I own.”
My stomach dropped.
Jack continued.
“But I didn't authorize what you're describing.”
I looked at him.
“How do I know you're telling the truth?”
He nodded slowly.
“You don't.”
May you like
Silence.
Then he said, “And you shouldn't trust me just because I helped you once.”
