Chapter 5 - THE SECRET BENEATH THE MARIGOLD ROOM

The memory card contained photographs.
Shipping manifests.
Bank transfers.
Names.
Dates.
And video footage from a warehouse near the Chicago River.
I didn't understand most of it.
But I recognized one name.
Moretti.
My stomach tightened.
I stared at the screen.
Jack Moretti.
The man who had noticed my broken shoe.
The man who had sent me home to my son.
Was connected to whatever Ethan had hidden.
I didn't know whether that made Jack dangerous to me.
Or whether it meant he was already involved.
I called Ruth.
She came immediately.
Together, we reviewed the files.
Ruth's face changed.
“Ethan worked for a logistics company.”
I nodded.
“I know.”
She swallowed.
“Lily, he wasn't just an accountant.”
I stared.
“What?”
Ruth looked down.
“He handled payments for people who didn't want their names on paper.”
My heart pounded.
“Who?”
She hesitated.
Then whispered, “I don't know.”
I looked at the screen.
Then saw something else.
A photograph.
A man entering the Marigold Room through the service entrance.
Victor Hale.
May you like
My manager.
I stopped breathing.
