Chapter 6 - THE WOMAN WHO WOULDN'T LOWER HER EYES

I returned to work the next evening.
My ankle was better.
My shoe had been replaced.
But my fear hadn't disappeared.
Victor was waiting near the lockers.
“Lily.”
I stopped.
“Yes?”
He looked at me.
“Mr. Moretti asked about you.”
My stomach tightened.
“Why?”
Victor's jaw hardened.
“He wanted to know whether you were working tonight.”
I swallowed.
“And?”
Victor stepped closer.
“You stay away from him.”
I stared.
“Why?”
His expression changed.
“Because men like Jack Moretti don't notice women like you unless they want something.”
The words stung.
But I didn't lower my eyes.
Instead, I asked, “What do you want from me, Victor?”
He froze.
I continued.
“Because you've been acting frightened since the night I served coffee upstairs.”
Silence.
Victor stared.
Then whispered, “You have no idea what you're involved in.”
My heart pounded.
I took a breath.
“Then tell me.”
He stepped closer.
His voice dropped.
May you like
“Give me what Ethan left with you.”
I stopped breathing.
