The temporary financial restrictions came quickly.

Accounts were reviewed.

Transactions questioned.

Several company assets became subject to legal scrutiny.

Daniel blamed me.

He sent angry messages.

Accused me of destroying the business.

Then threatened to fight over the house.

I sat in my car outside Emily's office and cried.

Not because I wanted Daniel back.

Because I was exhausted.

A marriage.

A home.

A future I'd imagined.

All unraveling.

“Sarah?”

I wiped my face.

“Yes?”

“I heard about the court proceedings.”

He was quiet.

Then asked:

“Are you safe?”

I nodded.

“Yes.”

“Good.”

I swallowed.

“I'm tired.”

His voice softened.

“I imagine you are.”

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then he said:

“You don't have to solve everything tonight.”

May you like

I began crying again.

Because for twelve years, I'd believed I had to.
