Chapter 5 - THE PHOTOGRAPH REBECCA FORGOT
The photograph arrived anonymously.
A printed image.
No return address.
No note.
Just a picture of Daniel and Rebecca standing outside a hotel.
The date was six months earlier.
Daniel had told me he was attending a conference in Boston.
Rebecca wore a red coat.
Daniel had his arm around her waist.
I stared at the image.
Then turned it over.
Written on the back were four words.
ASK ABOUT THE CONTRACT.
I called Emily.
She answered immediately.
“Sarah?”
“I received something.”
I described the photograph.
Emily was quiet.
Then said:
“Don't destroy it.”
“I won't.”
“And don't confront Daniel.”
I swallowed.
“Why?”
“Because I think the affair may be connected to the financial irregularities.”
I looked at the photograph again.
Rebecca smiling.
Daniel holding her close.
Then I noticed something in the background.
A company logo on the hotel entrance.
Hawthorne Capital.
