Gabriel invited me to discuss a consulting position.
Not at Hawthorne Capital directly.
At a nonprofit arts foundation he funded.
The organization needed someone to manage fundraising events and donor relationships.
I was qualified.
More than qualified.
But I hesitated.
“I don't want anyone thinking you hired me because of Daniel.”
Gabriel nodded.
“Then interview with the foundation director.”
I stared.
“What?”
“Go through the normal process.”
I smiled faintly.
“You're serious?”
“Completely.”
He leaned back.
“Sarah, I don't want you dependent on me.”
My throat tightened.
He continued.
“I want you to have options.”
I looked down.
For the first time in years, someone was offering me an opportunity without asking me to surrender anything in return.
I accepted the interview.

And two weeks later, I got the job.
On my own merits.
