Chapter 4 - THE COMPANY BUILT WITH HER MONEY

Daniel Mercer founded Mercer Development Group six years into our marriage.

He told everyone he'd built it from nothing.

That wasn't entirely true.

The first investment came from my inheritance.

My grandmother had left me $180,000.

Daniel asked to borrow it.

He promised repayment.

Then said it would be better if we treated it as a family investment.

I agreed.

Because I believed in him.

Because we were married.

Because I thought success belonged to both of us.

Over the next six years, I worked behind the scenes.

I helped coordinate client events.

Managed relationships.

Introduced him to investors.

Reviewed contracts when his office manager quit.

Daniel called it helping out.

I called it marriage.

Now Emily was explaining that the company had grown into a business worth millions.

And my contribution might matter legally.

“Sarah,” she said.

“Your name appears on several early financial documents.”

I stared.

“What documents?”

“Capital contributions.”

My heart tightened.

“And?”

“And there may be evidence that the company used marital assets without proper accounting.”

I closed my eyes.

For years, Daniel had told me I didn't understand business.

Now I realized he'd depended on me not asking questions.
