Chapter 7 - THE DIVORCE PAPERS AT BREAKFAST

Daniel received the divorce petition on a Tuesday morning.
He called me immediately.
“Sarah, what the hell is this?”
I was sitting in Emily's office.
“Divorce papers.”
“I can read.”
“Then we're making progress.”
Emily covered a smile.
Daniel's voice sharpened.
“You're trying to take my company.”
I looked at the documents.
“I'm asking for a fair division of marital property.”
“You didn't build that business.”
I closed my eyes.
There it was.
Six years of work.
My inheritance.
My contacts.
My unpaid labor.
All dismissed in one sentence.
I took a breath.
“Then you won't have any trouble proving that.”
Silence.
Daniel lowered his voice.
“Sarah, don't do this.”
I stared out the window.
“You should have thought about that before you brought Rebecca to our anniversary dinner.”
He hung up.
Emily looked at me.
“Are you okay?”
I nodded.
Then shook my head.
Then laughed.
“I don't know.”
May you like
She smiled gently.
“That's allowed.”
