Chapter 5 - THE POISON IN THE PAST

Vincent had spent six months believing his poisoning was an isolated betrayal.

An ambitious underboss wanted power.

He tried to remove Vincent.

The attempt failed.

The underboss was killed.

Case closed.

But the appearance of Adrian Voss changed the picture.

Enzo began reviewing old records.

Financial transfers.

Security footage.

Meeting schedules.

The investigation uncovered a pattern.

Voss had met privately with the underboss shortly before the poisoning.

The meetings were not recorded in official schedules.

Payments moved through several shell companies.

And one transaction occurred on the morning Vincent drank the poisoned espresso.

Vincent stared at the evidence.

“So he wasn't acting alone.”

Enzo shook his head.

“Doesn't look like it.”

Vincent leaned back.

His stomach tightened.

For months, he'd been terrified of food.

Now he realized the person who helped arrange the poisoning might still be operating inside his territory.

Enzo placed another document on the desk.

“There's more.”

Vincent looked up.

“Voss has been using gambling debts to recruit workers from several businesses connected to us.”

Vincent frowned.

“What kind of workers?”

“Drivers. Security staff. Warehouse employees.”

Enzo hesitated.

“And domestic staff.”

Vincent's eyes sharpened.

“The estate?”

Enzo nodded.

“Possibly.”

Vincent stared toward the door.

Somewhere downstairs, Norah was preparing another bowl of broth.

And someone inside his own house might be helping the man who wanted him dead.
