Chapter 3 - A MARRIAGE SIGNED IN BLACK INK

Three weeks later, Gabriel and I stood inside a small courthouse in Orange County.

No yacht.

No two hundred guests.

No white roses.

Just two witnesses.

A judge.

And a marriage license.

I wore a simple ivory dress.

Gabriel wore a dark suit.

Before the ceremony, he looked at me.

“Last chance.”

I smiled.

“To run?”

He nodded.

I laughed softly.

“Not this time.”

Our marriage had practical reasons.

Keene Maritime needed stability.

Lancaster Global needed a trusted partner in the harbor redevelopment project.

And Gabriel had his own reasons for wanting a permanent alliance.

But we'd agreed on one thing.

No lies.

The judge began.

We exchanged vows.

Signed the certificate.

And became husband and wife.

When Gabriel kissed me, it was gentle.

Careful.

Almost questioning.

I looked up.

He smiled faintly.

“Mrs. Lancaster.”

I laughed.

“That's going to take some getting used to.”

He took my hand.

May you like

“We have time.”

And for the first time, I believed it.
