Chapter 9 - The Gavel of Absolute Justice

Six months later, Courtroom 4B of the United States District Court was packed to maximum capacity for the sentencing of Liam Vance and Vanessa Cole.

Sitting in the front row of the gallery was myself, holding my healthy, beautiful, four-week-old baby boy, little Arthur Liam Vance (named in honor of my late father).

Arthur was chubby-cheeked, with bright blue eyes, sleeping peacefully wrapped in a soft cashmere blanket against my chest. Beside me sat Julian Hayes and Marcus Vance.

Liam Vance and Vanessa Cole sat at the defense table in bright orange federal prison jumpsuits, their hands and feet bound in heavy iron transport chains. Their former arrogance had been completely obliterated by six months in solitary detention; Liam’s hair was shaved, his face gaunt and grey.

Chief Judge Eleanor Sterling took the bench with severe, uncompromising moral authority.

“Liam Vance, Vanessa Cole,” Judge Sterling declared, her voice echoing through the silent stone chamber like rolling thunder. “You engaged in a calculated, depraved, and monstrous campaign of prolonged physical torture, starvation, and attempted murder against a pregnant mother for corporate financial greed.”

Judge Sterling brought down her heavy wooden gavel with a resounding crack that shook the courtroom.

“On all counts of Aggravated Kidnapping, Felony Torture, and Premeditated Attempted Murder of a Mother and Child, Liam Vance is hereby sentenced to Life Imprisonment without the possibility of parole, to be served at the United States Penitentiary, ADX Florence Supermax.”

Liam collapsed forward onto the defense table, letting out a broken, hopeless wail as federal marshals secured his chains.

“Vanessa Cole is sentenced to thirty-five years at the Federal Correctional Institution, Aliceville, without eligibility for early parole, followed by mandatory financial forfeiture of all assets.”

Judge Sterling struck the gavel a second time.

“The marriage between Clara Vance and Liam Vance is declared permanently dissolved ab initio, with sole, exclusive, unchallengeable physical and legal custody of Arthur Vance awarded to the mother.”

As the federal marshals hauled the two weeping convicts through the heavy iron holding door forever, I looked down at my baby boy and smiled—a pure, radiant smile that banished every shadow of that dark basement.

Justice was complete, absolute, and unshakeable.
