Chapter 4 - The Breach of the Iron Door

The sound of shattering glass, splintering oak, and high-velocity flashbang grenades echoed down the basement stairwell like rolling thunder.
Blinding white tactical floodlights flooded the darkness.
“FEDERAL OFFICERS! NOBODY MOVE!” a deep, commanding voice bellowed through the upper halls.
Vanessa shrieked, dropping her cigarette, scrambling back up the stairs in sheer panic.
“What the hell is that?!” Liam screamed, dropping his scotch bottle. The glass shattered across the concrete, liquor splashing over his boots as he reached behind his waistband for his concealed pistol.
CRACK.
Before Liam’s fingers could clear his holster, the heavy reinforced wooden basement door was blown off its hinges by a hydraulic breaching ram.
Four operators dressed in black Kevlar, carrying suppressed MP5s and wearing night-vision optics, flooded down the narrow staircase with blinding, synchronized precision.
Leading the breach was Marcus Vance—my late father’s chief of private executive protection—flanked by Senior Special Agent David Miller of the FBI’s Violent Crimes Task Force.
Marcus drove his tactical boot into Liam’s chest, throwing him backward onto the floor, while Agent Miller stripped the weapon from his hand and slammed Liam face-down onto the damp concrete.
CLACK.
The heavy steel handcuffs snapped shut around Liam’s wrists with a resounding, bone-crushing click.
“Clara!” Marcus shouted, dropping to his knees beside me, stripping his tactical jacket to wrap it around my shivering, emaciated body.
“Marcus...” I choked out, tears finally breaking through my iron composure as I felt his warm, familiar hands gently supporting my head. “The baby... please, check my baby...”
“The medics are right behind us, Clara,” Marcus whispered, his voice trembling with profound, suppressed rage as he saw the heavy iron chain padlocked around my ankle.

I was free.
