Chapter 5 - The Trauma Pavilion at St. Jude

At 2:30 AM, the emergency sirens of three tactical ambulances wailed through the quiet streets, clearing the highway toward St. Jude Memorial Hospital.

Inside the High-Risk Obstetric Trauma Suite, a specialized multidisciplinary medical team led by Dr. Eleanor Sterling swarmed around my gurney.

Continuous fetal Doppler monitors filled the room with a rapid, rhythmic, reassuring sound:

Thump-thump... thump-thump... thump-thump.

“Fetal heart rate is 142 beats per minute,” Dr. Sterling announced, letting out a deep, audible breath of relief. “The amniotic sac is intact. The placenta has not separated.”

Tears streamed down my temples, soaking the sterile pillow.

My baby boy had survived the darkness.

“Severe maternal malnutrition, Stage-Two electrolyte depletion, and acute bilateral soft-tissue contusions,” Dr. Sterling reported to the attending nurses. “Start high-potency intravenous nutrient repletion, broad-spectrum prophylactic antibiotic therapy, and continuous fetal monitoring.”

While the nurses gently cleaned the lacerations on my wrists and ankles and placed warm thermal blankets over my shivering frame, Special Agent David Miller stepped into the private consultation room.

Beside him walked Julian Hayes—the chief corporate litigator of my father’s conglomerate.

Julian opened his briefcase, his face pale with cold fury.

“Clara,” Julian said softly, sitting in the armchair beside my bed. “We received the complete cloud transmission at 1:15 AM. Every single video file has been authenticated and entered into the federal evidentiary registry.”

“And Vanessa?” I asked, my voice gaining strength with every ounce of hydration flowing through my IV line.

“Vanessa was apprehended trying to climb out of the first-floor pantry window,” Agent Miller replied with chilling satisfaction. “She had two forged passports, three hundred thousand dollars in cash, and the original deed transfer documents in her bag.”
