Chapter 3 - The Emergency Beacon at Midnight

Liam stood at the bottom of the stairs, holding a fresh bottle of scotch in one hand and a manila folder in the other. Behind him, Vanessa leaned against the handrail, dressed in a silk robe, smoking a cigarette with cold disdain.

“Maya,” Liam barked, his voice slurred with alcohol. “What the hell are you doing down here? Get upstairs and pack the car. We’re driving to the private airport at five.”

Maya stood up quickly, pocketing the phone, keeping her head low. “I was just seeing if she was awake to sign the papers, Liam.”

“Good,” Liam sneered, stepping across the damp floorboards toward me.

He tossed the heavy folder onto the floor beside my bare, bruised legs.

“Look at you, Clara,” Liam mocked, nudging my shoulder with the steel toe of his boot. “The brilliant tech heiress. Reduced to drinking out of a bowl like a stray dog.”

I kept my cheek against the cold concrete, my right arm wrapped tightly around my swollen abdomen, shielding my five-month pregnancy.

“Sign the master equity transfer, Clara,” Vanessa purred from the stairs, exhaling a cloud of gray smoke. “Once you sign over your father’s fifty-one percent voting shares, Liam will call an ambulance. If you don't... well, twenty below zero tonight will take care of both you and that little bastard.”

I slowly pushed myself up onto one elbow, looking into the eyes of the man I had married three years ago.

“You won't get a single dollar, Liam,” I whispered. My voice was hoarse, raspy from dehydration, but beneath the weakness was an iron core that made him pause.

Liam’s jaw tightened into ugly fury. He raised his hand, the leather folder whistling through the air to strike my face.
