Chapter 9 - The Cap and the Gown

Eighteen months later, the great auditorium of Columbia University was filled with the joyful music of Pomp and Circumstance.
Dressed in a pristine royal-blue graduation gown and black cap with a golden honors tassel, I stood on the main stage to receive my Master of Science in Advanced Clinical Nursing and Trauma Care, graduating Summa Cum Laude at the top of my class.
Sitting in the front row of the VIP gallery were my mother, looking radiant and healthy in a lavender silk dress, and Caleb, proudly holding a massive bouquet of white lilies.
And sitting beside them, dressed in a sharp charcoal suit with a proud, breathtaking smile across his handsome face, was Dominic Mercer.
When the Dean handed me my diploma and the auditorium erupted into thunderous applause, Dominic stood up, clapping with a devotion and love that outshone every billionaire in the room.
That afternoon, Dominic officially appointed me Chief Executive Clinical Director of the Mercer Healthcare Syndicate, overseeing thirty trauma centers and medical transport networks across New York.
That evening, Dominic brought me back to the 48th-floor penthouse on Park Avenue.
The lights of Manhattan sparkled beneath us like an endless field of diamonds.
Dominic walked over to the floor-to-ceiling glass, took both of my hands into his warm, strong palms, and looked into my eyes with infinite tenderness.
“Grace,” Dominic spoke softly, his voice rich with deep emotion. “The first night you were here, you told your brother that men like me only create debts... and that people who owe powerful men never belong to themselves again.”
He reached into his jacket, pulled out a small black velvet box, and knelt before me on the polished marble.
Inside was a flawless, radiant-cut blue diamond surrounded by a halo of platinum.
“I don't want a debt, Grace,” Dominic whispered. “I want to give you my name, my empire, and my entire heart. Will you marry me?”
Tears of pure, overwhelming happiness spilled down my cheeks.

“Yes, Dominic,” I smiled, pulling him to his feet. “A thousand times, yes.”
Dominic slid the ring onto my finger and pulled me into a fierce, passionate embrace under the starlight.
