Chapter 3 - The Specialist at Midnight

At 3:45 AM, Dominic pressed a single speed-dial button on his satellite terminal.

“Dr. Aaron Bennett,” Dominic spoke into the speaker.

“Mr. Mercer,” a sleepy yet instantly alert voice responded. “What is the emergency?”

“I have a patient at Mercy General in Queens. Martha Holloway. Fifty-four years old with an acute spinal meningioma compressing the T-8 vertebrae,” Dominic recited with clinical precision, having memorized the exact diagnosis I had whispered to Caleb ten minutes prior. “I want her transferred by medical transport to the private neurosurgical pavilion at Columbia Presbyterian before 5:00 AM.”

“The surgical schedules are fully booked for three weeks, Dominic—”

“Clear Suite One, Aaron,” Dominic cut him off with cold, absolute authority. “Perform the resection yourself at sunrise. The Mercer Trust has already deposited half a million into your research foundation.”

The doctor let out a long breath. “Understood, Dominic. The transport team is rolling right now.”

Dominic hung up the phone and looked at me.

I stood in the center of the vast penthouse, weeping uncontrollably. For six months, I had carried the crushing weight of impending death, working seventy-hour weeks across laundries, diners, and cleaning routes, watching my mother slip away while the world walked past without caring.

In less than ten minutes, this terrifying man had moved an entire mountain with a single phone call.

I dropped to my knees on the marble floor, burying my face in my hands. “Thank you... oh God, Mr. Mercer, thank you...”

Before I could say another word, Dominic knelt on the floor in front of me.

He reached out, his warm, calloused hand gently cupping my chin, lifting my tear-streaked face until my eyes met his.

“Get off your knees, Grace,” Dominic murmured, his voice softer than I had ever thought possible. “A woman who fights for her family with her bare hands never bows to anyone. Especially not to me.”

He pulled a clean linen handkerchief from his pocket and gently dabbed the tears from my cheeks.

“Now,” Dominic continued, his jaw tightening into steel, “tell me everything Evelyn Ashford did to you.”
