Chapter 9 - THE BOSS WHO WALKED AWAY FROM HIS EMPIRE

Dante began restructuring his businesses.

He sold several companies.

Closed others.

Cooperated with financial investigators.

And separated himself from criminal operations connected to the Moretti organization.

The process was difficult.

Some associates resisted.

Others threatened lawsuits.

A few disappeared from his life entirely.

Dante accepted it.

---

One afternoon, Sonia found him sitting alone in Lombardi's.

The restaurant was closed between lunch and dinner.

He stared at an untouched espresso.

She approached.

“Bad day?”

He smiled faintly.

“Complicated.”

She sat across from him.

“Want to talk?”

He looked at her.

“Do you ever regret warning me?”

Sonia stared.

“What?”

“The napkin.”

She considered.

“No.”

He looked surprised.

“Even after everything?”

She nodded.

“I didn't know who you were.”

He smiled sadly.

“Would it have changed your decision?”

Sonia thought about it.

Then said:

“I hope not.”

Dante looked down.

“That answer means more than you know.”

---

Their friendship grew slowly.

They talked after closing.

Shared meals.

Walked through the city.

Sonia told him about Emma's nursing-school exams.

Dante told her about Anthony.

She learned he loved old jazz records.

He learned she hated olives.

They argued about whether New York pizza was better than Chicago pizza.

Sonia insisted Columbus had underrated restaurants.

Dante called that an unforgivable opinion.

She laughed.

---

One evening, Dante walked her to the subway.

Rain began falling.

Sonia looked up.

“Of course.”

He smiled.

“New York has a sense of timing.”

She laughed.

Then he grew serious.

“Sonia.”

“Yes?”

“I'd like to take you to dinner.”

She smiled.

“We eat dinner together all the time.”

“Not like that.”

Her heart skipped.

She looked at him.

“Dante.”

He waited.

“You own the restaurant where I work.”

His expression changed.

“I know.”

“And people already think I'm getting special treatment.”

He nodded.

“Then I shouldn't put you in that position.”

Sonia studied him.

He continued.

“If you ever want to go out with me, it should be because you choose to. Not because I control your paycheck.”

She smiled softly.

“That's the right answer.”

He laughed.

“I've been practicing.”

---

Two months later, Sonia accepted a position with a hospitality group unrelated to Dante's businesses.

She had applied independently.

Interviewed.

Negotiated her salary.

And earned the role.

On her final night at Lombardi's, Dante waited near the door.

“So,” he said, “about that dinner.”

Sonia smiled.

“Are you asking me on a date?”

“Yes.”

She pretended to consider.

Then laughed.

“Yes, Dante.”

May you like

His face softened.

“Good.”
