Chapter 11 - THE TRIAL THAT BROUGHT THE PAST HOME

Harold Mercer's trial began the following spring.

Robert Mitchell testified.

He described the unsafe construction site.

The altered records.

The threats.

The years of silence.

Sonia sat in the gallery beside Emma.

Her hands trembled.

Dante sat a few rows behind them.

He didn't try to take over.

He simply stayed.

---

The defense challenged Robert's memory.

His age.

His illness.

The time that had passed.

But the documents supported his account.

And Vinny's testimony filled in important gaps.

The prosecution presented evidence of deliberate concealment and witness intimidation.

The courtroom listened.

---

When Robert finished testifying, Sonia met him outside.

He looked exhausted.

She hugged him.

“I'm proud of you.”

His eyes filled.

“I should have done it sooner.”

She shook her head.

“You did it now.”

He smiled.

“That counts?”

She kissed his cheek.

“It counts.”

---

Dante testified later.

He explained his family's connection to the project.

The records he'd discovered.

The efforts he'd made to preserve evidence.

He acknowledged the wrongdoing associated with businesses he had inherited.

He didn't pretend innocence where responsibility existed.

Sonia watched him.

For the first time, she understood how much courage honesty could require.

---

The trial continued for weeks.

Then the verdict came.

Harold Mercer was convicted on multiple charges connected to the cover-up and financial misconduct.

The court proceedings did not erase Anthony Bell's death.

They did not return eighteen years to Robert.

But they established the truth.

And for Sonia, that mattered.

---

Outside the courthouse, Robert looked at Dante.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then Robert extended his hand.

Dante took it.

Robert said:

“Anthony deserved better.”

Dante nodded.

“Yes.”

Robert's eyes filled.

“Make sure nobody else gets forgotten.”

May you like

Dante swallowed.

“I will.”
