Chapter 8 - THE LAST WITNESS

Vinny's arrest changed the investigation.

Faced with charges, he began cooperating through his attorney.

He admitted he'd been involved in falsifying safety records on the construction project.

He also identified a former executive who had ordered the cover-up.

The man's name was Harold Mercer.

He had been Richard Moretti's business partner.

He was now a wealthy real estate developer living in Connecticut.

Sonia stared at his photograph.

“He's been free all these years?”

Dante nodded.

“Yes.”

“And Anthony died?”

“Yes.”

Her voice shook.

“And my father lived afraid?”

Dante looked down.

“Yes.”

---

Robert agreed to testify.

Sonia was terrified.

Her father was weak from treatment.

He tired easily.

But he insisted.

“I should have spoken years ago.”

Sonia took his hand.

“You were protecting us.”

He smiled sadly.

“And now I need to protect the truth.”

---

The investigation moved forward.

Financial records.

Witness statements.

Old inspection reports.

Vinny's testimony.

Robert's documents.

Together, they formed a clearer picture.

Anthony Bell had discovered dangerous conditions and threatened to report them.

Management had concealed the violations.

After his death, records were altered.

Witnesses were pressured.

And the truth disappeared beneath money and fear.

---

Dante struggled with the revelations.

His father had been involved in the business.

The Moretti name appeared throughout the records.

He had inherited companies built partly on decisions he now despised.

Sonia watched him wrestle with it.

One evening, she asked:

“What are you going to do?”

Dante looked at her.

“Tell the truth.”

She nodded.

“Even if it costs you?”

He met her eyes.

“Yes.”

---

Sonia studied him.

For the first time, she saw the difference between power and character.

Power could frighten people into silence.

May you like

Character was what someone chose when silence would be easier.

And Dante Moretti was beginning to choose differently.
