Chapter 13 - THE MAN WHO FINALLY LEARNED PEACE

Dante's life changed in ways he hadn't expected.

He sold the last of his interests in several businesses connected to his family's criminal past.

He focused on legitimate investments.

Hospitality.

Real estate.

Community development.

He funded safety training programs for construction workers through an independently administered foundation honoring Anthony Bell.

He didn't expect forgiveness.

He didn't ask people to forget.

He simply tried to build something better.

---

One evening, Sonia found him sitting on the balcony of his apartment.

He was looking at the city.

She stepped beside him.

“What are you thinking?”

He smiled faintly.

“About Anthony.”

Sonia took his hand.

Dante continued.

“He used to say I had too much money and not enough sense.”

She laughed.

“Sounds accurate.”

He smiled.

“He was right.”

They stood quietly.

Then Dante looked at her.

“Do you ever wish we'd met differently?”

Sonia considered.

“Yes.”

He looked surprised.

She continued.

“I wish nobody had tried to hurt you.”

He smiled sadly.

“Me too.”

“And I wish Vinny hadn't threatened my family.”

“Yes.”

She took his hand.

“But I don't wish I hadn't met you.”

Dante's eyes softened.

“Good.”

She smiled.

“Good.”

---

Their relationship deepened.

They traveled.

Cooked together.

Visited Robert and Emma.

Argued about music.

Laughed.

Built routines.

Dante learned that Sonia hated being surprised with expensive gifts.

She preferred handwritten notes.

So he began leaving them in ordinary places.

Inside her cookbook.

Beside her coffee mug.

Tucked beneath the windshield wiper of her car.

One morning, she found a note that read:

YOU SAVED ME BEFORE YOU KNEW MY NAME.

She smiled.

May you like

Then wrote beneath it:

AND YOU STILL OWE ME FOR THAT STEAK.
