Chapter 4 - THE SECRET HER FATHER NEVER TOLD HER

Robert Mitchell had spent thirty years building skyscrapers.

He had worked through snowstorms, heat waves, strikes, and recessions.

He rarely complained.

But when Sonia asked about the Moretti construction project, his hands began shaking.

“It was eighteen years ago,” he said.

Sonia sat beside him.

“What happened?”

Robert looked down.

“A worker named Anthony Bell was killed.”

Emma stood in the doorway.

“An accident?”

Robert closed his eyes.

“That's what the report said.”

Sonia felt cold.

“What really happened?”

Her father swallowed.

“The site wasn't safe. Management knew.”

Silence.

“Anthony complained. He threatened to report the violations.”

Robert looked toward the window.

“Two days later, he fell from an unfinished floor.”

Emma covered her mouth.

Sonia stared.

“Did you see it?”

“No.”

“Then how do you know?”

Robert looked at her.

“Because I saw the inspection reports before they disappeared.”

---

The company had been a subcontractor connected to Moretti-owned property.

Robert had never met Dante.

At the time, Dante was twenty-three and working overseas.

But the family name remained attached to the project.

Robert had kept copies of the safety reports.

Then someone threatened him.

He'd been told to forget what he saw.

He had a wife.

Two daughters.

A mortgage.

So he stayed silent.

For eighteen years.

---

Sonia looked at her father.

“Why didn't you tell us?”

His eyes filled.

“Because I was ashamed.”

She shook her head.

“Dad.”

“I should have done something.”

Sonia took his hand.

“You were afraid.”

He nodded.

“That doesn't make it right.”

She swallowed.

“No.”

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then Robert said:

“I don't know whether Dante Moretti knew anything about it.”

Sonia looked toward the door.

“Then we should find out.”

---

The next morning, Sonia called Dante.

He answered immediately.

“Good morning.”

She took a breath.

“I need to ask you something.”

“Go ahead.”

“Do you know Anthony Bell?”

Silence.

Then Dante said:

“Why?”

Sonia's stomach tightened.

“My father worked on a construction site where Anthony died.”

Dante was quiet.

Then:

“I know the case.”

Sonia closed her eyes.

“Was your family involved?”

“Yes.”

Her heart hammered.

“Did you know the site was unsafe?”

“No.”

She swallowed.

“Do you believe me?”

Dante's voice was calm.

“I believe your father has a reason for asking.”

Sonia looked down.

“He kept records.”

Another silence.

Then Dante said:

“Would he be willing to speak with an independent investigator?”

Sonia hesitated.

“Why?”

“Because I've spent years trying to understand what happened on that site.”

She stared.

“You have?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

May you like

Dante's voice changed.

“Because Anthony Bell was my best friend.”
