Chapter 12 - THE RESTAURANT WITH HER NAME ABOVE THE DOOR

Two years after the night of the rotten steak, Sonia opened her own restaurant.

It was called Mitchell's Table.

A small neighborhood place in Queens.

Warm lighting.

Comfortable booths.

Fresh food.

Fair wages.

A kitchen where employees could speak without fear.

Sonia stood outside on opening morning.

Her hands shook.

Emma hugged her.

“You did it.”

Sonia laughed.

“We'll see if anyone comes.”

Emma grinned.

“People will come.”

---

Robert arrived wearing a navy suit.

His cancer was in remission.

He still attended regular appointments.

But he looked stronger.

He stood beneath the sign.

Then smiled.

“Mitchell's Table.”

Sonia's eyes filled.

“Do you like it?”

He took her hand.

“I love it.”

---

Dante arrived carrying flowers.

Sonia smiled.

“You're early.”

He looked around.

“Wanted to see the place before the crowd.”

She laughed.

“You've seen it twenty times.”

“Not open.”

He handed her the flowers.

Then stepped back.

“Congratulations.”

Sonia looked at him.

“Thank you.”

He smiled.

“You earned this.”

---

By noon, the restaurant was full.

Customers praised the food.

The kitchen worked smoothly.

Employees laughed.

Sonia moved between tables with a smile she no longer had to force.

At three o'clock, Dante sat at table six.

She approached.

“Ready to order?”

He smiled.

“Steak.”

Sonia laughed.

“Seriously?”

“Medium rare.”

She shook her head.

“You're impossible.”

He leaned forward.

“Only for you.”

---

That evening, after closing, Sonia stood alone in the dining room.

She looked around.

The tables.

The lights.

The kitchen.

The people she'd hired.

The place she'd built.

For years, she'd believed survival was enough.

May you like

Now she understood she was allowed to want more.

And she had made it happen.
