Chapter 7 - Kelsey’s Plastic Collapse

Forty-eight hours after the arrest, Kelsey Hale was granted temporary release on her own recognizance after agreeing to turn state’s evidence against Richard.

Dressed in her wrinkled clothes from two days earlier, with smeared makeup and no money for a taxi, she was forced to walk six miles in the freezing rain to the Dublin estate.

When she arrived at the wrought-iron gates, she found two county marshals standing beside an industrial locksmith van.

All the exterior door locks had been replaced.

On the front lawn sat two cardboard boxes containing her personal clothing. Everything else—the diamond jewelry, the designer handbags, the imported Italian furniture—had been locked inside the house under a federal judicial asset seizure seal.

“What is this?!” Kelsey shrieked at the marshals. “This is my home! Richard bought this for me!”

Senior Marshal Davis stepped forward, handing her a certified notice of ejectment.

“This property was purchased using embezzled corporate capital belonging to Mercer Global Logistics,” Marshal Davis stated plainly. “Under Ohio Revised Code Section 2981, this residence has been restored to the rightful owner, Mrs. Emily Mercer. You have five minutes to take these two boxes and vacate the perimeter.”

Kelsey grabbed her phone and frantically dialed her mother in Florida.

“Mom! Send me money! Send me three thousand dollars right now!”

Her mother’s voice came through the speaker, cold and furious: “Kelsey, your face is on every local news broadcast in the Midwest! The tabloids are calling you the 'Gold-Digging Stepmother Who Attacked a Pregnant Widow.' Your sister has been suspended from her private school because of the scandal! Do not call this house again.”

The line went dead.

Kelsey stood in the gravel driveway, holding her cardboard boxes as the cold rain soaked through her ruined camel coat.

The glamorous life she had built on the suffering of another woman had vanished in less than seventy-two hours.
