Chapter 4 - The Siren at the Gate

Two county sheriff cruisers and an emergency paramedic unit pulled up the circular brick driveway, tires throwing wet mulch as they came to a halt.

Captain Thomas Vance and Deputy Miller jumped out of their vehicles, unholstering their sidearms as two paramedics rushed toward the porch with a heavy trauma stretcher.

“Emily!” Paramedic Sarah knelt beside me, immediately wrapping a sterile thermal blanket around my shivering shoulders and checking my vitals. “Blood pressure is 150 over 95. Contractions are two minutes apart. We need to transport her to Ohio State Medical Center immediately!”

The front door clicked open. Richard stepped onto the porch, trying to smooth his tailored collar, forcing a patronizing smile.

“Officers, thank God you’re here,” Richard began, raising his hands in a theatrical gesture of innocence. “My daughter is having a severe medical breakdown. She slipped on the porch while having an emotional tantrum over her late husband. I was merely trying to keep her calm until medical help arrived.”

I looked up at Captain Vance, pointing a trembling, steady finger at Richard.

“He broke into my house with a stolen key, Captain,” I spoke clearly through the pain. “He dragged me by my hair from the kitchen to the porch. He watched my water break while his wife laughed at me. And on my kitchen island, my security camera captured the entire assault in 4K synchronized audio.”

Richard’s face drained of every ounce of blood. “That’s... that’s a lie! You don't have cameras in the kitchen!”

“I installed two motion-activated smart-home hubs four weeks ago after Daniel died, Richard,” I said, looking him dead in the eye. “Every second of your violence is sitting on Margaret Sloan’s legal server right now.”

Captain Vance’s expression hardened into granite. He stepped forward, pushing Richard back against the brick siding.

“Richard Hale, step down from the porch and place your hands behind your back!” Captain Vance commanded.

“Do you know who I am?!” Richard roared, struggling against the officer’s grip. “I am the CEO of Hale Logistics! You can’t arrest me on my daughter’s property!”

“You are trespassing on private property, sir,” Deputy Miller said, twisting Richard’s arms behind his back and clicking heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists. “And you are under arrest for Aggravated Domestic Battery on a Pregnant Woman, Burglary in the First Degree, and Criminal Endangerment.”

Kelsey shrieked from the doorway, recording with her phone. “You can’t arrest my husband! Stop touching him!”

Deputy Miller turned to her with icy disdain. “Ma’am, put the phone down and step outside. You are being detained as an accessory to felony home invasion.”

As the paramedics lifted my stretcher into the back of the ambulance, I saw my father pinned against his own Mercedes sedan in handcuffs, screaming curses into the rain, while Kelsey wept in terror as her designer handbag fell into the muddy grass.
