Chapter 3 - The Fraud Clause Triggered

Inside the house, Richard’s phone was vibrating violently against the mahogany desk.
He picked it up with an arrogant grin, expecting his broker to confirm the transfer of the $1.2 million liquidity reserve.
“Hale speaking.”
“Mr. Hale, this is Arthur Sterling, Senior Vice President of Risk and Compliance at Chase Commercial Private Bank,” a cold, official voice stated over the line. “We have flagged your transfer request regarding the Mercer Logistics Escrow Account.”
Richard’s smile faltered. “What’s the hold-up, Sterling? I submitted the signed authorization from my daughter.”
“Our biometric forensic team ran the digital signature against the verified exemplar on file for Emily Mercer,” Sterling replied with clinical precision. “The signature submitted is a ninety-eight percent match to a computer-generated tracing. Under Section 12-A of the Mercer Testamentary Asset Protection Trust, any unauthorized attempt to encumber or alienate trust assets by a non-beneficiary triggers an immediate emergency asset freeze across all affiliated corporate lines.”
“What affiliated lines?!” Richard yelled into the phone, sweat instantly beading along his forehead. “I own Hale-Mercer Logistics!”
“Not anymore, Mr. Hale,” Sterling answered ruthlessly. “Under the 2022 Partnership Operating Agreement co-signed by Daniel Mercer, Daniel held seventy-five percent of all super-voting shares. Upon his demise, those controlling shares transferred unconditionally to Emily Mercer. Due to your attempted fraudulent conversion, your twenty-five percent minority interest has been forfeited under the breach of fiduciary covenant.”
Richard’s hand shook so hard that he nearly dropped the receiver. “You can’t freeze my personal accounts! My payroll clears today! My mortgage on the Dublin estate is due on Friday!”
“All personal lines linked to the commercial guarantees are frozen pending federal grand jury review, Mr. Hale,” Sterling said. “Good day.”
The call went dead.

Kelsey rushed into the study, her designer sunglasses pushed up onto her hair, her face pale with sudden panic. “Richard! What’s happening? My platinum card just declined when I tried to order the moving truck online!”
Before Richard could answer, the entire room was bathed in pulsing red and blue emergency strobe lights.
