Chapter 8 - SOPHIE'S SECRET

Sophie left nursing school after her mother died.

That was true.

But it was not the entire truth.

Her mother, Maria Marchetti, had spent two years battling a serious neurological illness.

During the final months, Sophie became her primary caregiver.

She studied during hospital visits.

Worked nights.

And slept whenever exhaustion finally defeated her.

Then Maria died.

Sophie missed classes.

Fell behind.

And struggled to pay tuition.

But something else happened.

During her final clinical placement, Sophie reported a medication documentation error involving a patient.

The patient was not harmed.

The hospital reviewed the incident.

The supervising staff member was disciplined.

Then Sophie was accused of creating conflict.

Her clinical placement ended.

She had not been formally expelled.

But she was grieving, broke, and exhausted.

She withdrew.

Alexander listened as she explained.

They sat in the hospital garden.

A nurse had brought him outside in a wheelchair.

Sophie stared at her hands.

“I should have fought harder.”

Alexander shook his head.

“You were twenty-two.”

“I was supposed to finish.”

“You were taking care of your mother.”

She swallowed.

He continued.

“And you reported something you believed was dangerous.”

Sophie looked up.

“What if I was wrong?”

Alexander studied her.

“Were you?”

She shook her head.

“No.”

He smiled faintly.

“Then why are you ashamed?”

Tears filled her eyes.

She looked away.

“Because people kept telling me I was difficult.”

Alexander's expression softened.

He reached for her hand.

His fingers were still unsteady.

But he managed.

“Sophie.”

She looked at him.

“You saved my life because you refused to be quiet.”

A tear slipped down her cheek.

He continued.

“Don't let anyone convince you that was a flaw.”

She laughed weakly.

“You sound like my mother.”

Alexander smiled.

“I'll take that as a compliment.”

For a moment, the hospital garden felt peaceful.

Then Sophie noticed a man standing beyond the gate.

Dark coat.

Sunglasses.

Phone raised.

She stopped smiling.

Alexander followed her gaze.

The man turned and walked away.

Sophie stood.

“Someone's watching us.”

Alexander's expression hardened.

Security reviewed the footage.

The man was identified as an employee of a private investigation firm.

The firm had been retained by Julian Whitmore.

Miriam immediately filed a complaint and sought protective measures.

But that evening, Sophie received another message.

This one contained a photograph.

Her mother's grave.

Below it were six words.

SOME PEOPLE SHOULD HAVE STAYED INVISIBLE.

Sophie stared at the screen.

Then called the police.

May you like

She had spent too much of her life being frightened into silence.

Not again.
