Chapter 11 - THE FAMILY THAT TRIED TO ERASE HIM

Richard Whitmore was arrested first.

Julian followed two days later.

The charges included serious financial offenses, conspiracy-related allegations, and offenses arising from the deliberate harm to Alexander.

The precise criminal responsibility of each defendant would be determined through the legal process.

The arrests made national headlines.

WHITMORE FAMILY SCANDAL ROCKS HUDSON VALLEY.

BILLIONAIRE HEIR'S ILLNESS UNDER INVESTIGATION.

Alexander hated the headlines.

He hated the photographs.

The speculation.

The strangers discussing his medical condition.

But he cooperated with investigators.

He wanted the truth established.

Miriam worked with independent executives to stabilize Whitmore Holdings.

Financial controls were strengthened.

Questionable transactions were suspended.

And the proposed sale of the riverfront properties was halted.

Alexander began physical rehabilitation.

Some days were good.

Others were frustrating.

He learned to grip objects again.

To write.

To walk longer distances without exhaustion.

Sophie visited after work.

She had accepted a temporary position at a community health center.

One afternoon, she found Alexander struggling with a button.

His hands shook.

He cursed softly.

Sophie approached.

“Need help?”

“No.”

She nodded.

“Okay.”

He tried again.

Failed.

His jaw tightened.

Sophie sat nearby.

She waited.

Finally, he looked at her.

“Maybe.”

She smiled.

“Maybe what?”

He sighed.

“Maybe I need help.”

She moved closer.

“See? That wasn't fatal.”

He laughed.

She fastened the button.

Then stepped back.

Alexander looked at her.

“Thank you.”

Sophie smiled.

“Anytime.”

He hesitated.

“Sophie.”

“Yes?”

“When I'm better…”

She waited.

He looked down.

“Would you consider having dinner with me?”

Her heart pounded.

She smiled faintly.

“Are you asking me on a date?”

Alexander looked embarrassed.

“Yes.”

She laughed softly.

“Then ask me again when you're ready to leave this hospital.”

May you like

He smiled.

“Deal.”
