Chapter 12 - THE FIRST DAY WITHOUT FEAR

Alexander left the hospital after several more weeks.
His doctors arranged follow-up care, rehabilitation, and continued monitoring.
Recovery would take time.
He did not return immediately to Ravenswood.
Instead, he moved into a smaller house overlooking the Hudson.
No forbidden wings.
No private medical suite.
No locked doors.
Sophie visited one Saturday afternoon.
She brought homemade soup.
Alexander opened the door himself.
He looked healthier.
Still thinner than he should have been.
Still tired.
But alive in a way she had not seen before.
He smiled.
“You came.”
She lifted the container.
“Soup.”
He laughed.
“That's romantic.”
She smiled.
“It's practical.”
They ate at a small kitchen table.
Sunlight spilled through the windows.
Alexander told her about his rehabilitation.
Sophie told him about her work at the health center.
Then he asked:
“Have you thought about finishing nursing school?”
She hesitated.
“Sometimes.”
“What's stopping you?”
She looked down.
“Money. Time. Fear.”
Alexander nodded.
He didn't immediately offer to pay.
Instead, he asked:
“What would you need to make it possible?”
Sophie stared.
She told him about tuition.
Clinical placements.
Living expenses.
The difficulty of returning after so long.
He listened.
Then he said:
“I know a scholarship foundation that supports returning healthcare students.”
Sophie raised an eyebrow.
“Do you own it?”
Alexander smiled.
“No.”
“Influence it?”
He laughed.
“Not anymore.”
She smiled.
He continued.
“I can introduce you. The application would be yours.”
Sophie considered.
Then nodded.
“I'd like that.”
Later, they walked beside the river.
Alexander stopped near an old oak tree.
“Sophie.”
She turned.
He looked nervous.
“I believe I owe you a dinner invitation.”
She smiled.
“You do.”
He took a breath.
“Would you have dinner with me?”
Sophie looked at him.
For months, she had known him as a patient.
A frightened man.
A person fighting to survive.
Now she saw someone different.
A man trying to rebuild his life.
She smiled.
“Yes.”
Alexander laughed softly.
May you like
And beneath the afternoon sun, their story began again.
This time, without fear.
