Chapter 13 - THE WOMAN WHO WAS NEVER INVISIBLE

Sophie returned to nursing school the following semester.

She was twenty-five.

Older than many students.

More tired than some.

But more determined than ever.

The scholarship foundation accepted her application.

She worked part-time at the health center.

Studied late into the night.

And slowly rebuilt the future she'd once believed was gone.

Alexander supported her.

But he never treated her dream as something he owned.

Sometimes he brought dinner to her apartment.

Sometimes he helped quiz her.

Sometimes he simply sat quietly while she studied.

One evening, Sophie looked up from her textbook.

“What's the difference between you and my professors?”

Alexander smiled.

“I don't know.”

“My professors understand the material.”

He laughed.

She smiled.

Then she grew serious.

“Alexander?”

“Yes?”

“Do you ever regret what happened?”

He considered.

“I regret the years I lost.”

She nodded.

“I regret trusting people who didn't deserve it.”

He looked at her.

“But I don't regret meeting you.”

Sophie's eyes filled.

He continued.

“You saw me when everyone else wanted me to disappear.”

She swallowed.

“You were never invisible to me,” he said.

She looked down.

For years, Sophie had believed she needed to be quiet to survive.

At Ravenswood, that belief had nearly cost Alexander his life.

Now she was learning something different.

Her voice mattered.

Her judgment mattered.

Her future mattered.

She reached across the table.

Took Alexander's hand.

“I love you,” she whispered.

He froze.

Then his expression softened.

“I love you too.”

He leaned forward.

Kissed her gently.

May you like

And for the first time, Sophie felt that love did not require her to become smaller.

It allowed her to become more herself.
