Chapter 14 - THE TRIAL

The legal proceedings lasted many months.

Richard and Julian denied some allegations and contested others.

Dr. Voss cooperated with investigators.

Mrs. Fairbanks testified about the private treatment arrangements and the pressure placed on household staff.

The court heard evidence concerning financial transfers, altered records, and the circumstances of Alexander's medical deterioration.

Sophie testified.

She wore a simple navy suit.

Her hands shook slightly as she took the witness stand.

The attorney asked about the night Alexander collapsed.

Sophie described finding him on the staircase.

His breathing.

His pulse.

His inability to feel her hand.

She explained why she called emergency services.

Then the attorney asked:

“Miss Marchetti, why did you ignore the housekeeper's instructions?”

Sophie paused.

“Because Mr. Whitmore needed help.”

“Were you qualified to diagnose him?”

“No.”

“Then why did you intervene?”

Sophie looked toward Alexander.

He sat beside Miriam.

Watching her.

She turned back.

“Because I didn't need a diagnosis to recognize an emergency.”

The courtroom fell silent.

She continued.

“I knew he needed medical professionals. So I called them.”

The attorney studied her.

“No further questions.”

Later, Alexander testified about his symptoms, the pressure to sign documents, and his experiences during the months before hospitalization.

He spoke carefully.

Sometimes he paused.

Sometimes his hands trembled.

But he finished.

The proceedings ultimately established serious wrongdoing involving the management of his care and the attempted transfer of business control.

The defendants faced substantial legal consequences.

When it was over, Alexander walked outside with Sophie.

Reporters waited near the courthouse steps.

He stopped.

For a moment, Sophie thought he might retreat.

Instead, he took her hand.

A reporter called:

“Mr. Whitmore, what do you want people to remember about this case?”

Alexander looked at Sophie.

Then at the cameras.

“That the people with the least power in a room are sometimes the only ones willing to tell the truth.”

He squeezed her hand.

“And that we should listen.”

Sophie felt tears fill her eyes.

They walked away together.

Not because everything was suddenly perfect.

But because the worst was finally behind them.
