Chapter 9 - The Gavel of Retribution

Six months later, the criminal trial of The State versus Marcus Vance reached its definitive conclusion.

The jury deliberated for less than forty-five minutes before returning a unanimous guilty verdict on all seven felony counts.

Judge Robert Martinez delivered the sentence from the bench:

“Marcus Vance, your calculated cruelty toward the mother of your children and your willingness to leave two young infants in the dark to freeze and starve represents the height of moral depravity. You are hereby sentenced to thirty-eight years in the state penitentiary, without the possibility of early release.”

Marcus stood motionless, tears of self-pity streaming down his hollow cheeks as bailiffs secured the heavy transport chains around his waist and led him through the steel side door.

Claire sat in the gallery, her hand firmly holding her sister’s. She did not look at him with hatred. She looked at him with the calm, unbreakable peace of a mother who had survived the storm and protected her own.
