Chapter 3 - The Echo in the Boiler Room

The air in the subterranean corridor was damp and smelled of rust, standing water, and motor oil. Pipes overhead hissed with high-pressure steam, casting dancing shadows in the beam of the flashlights.

The hallway branched into two directions: the laundry room to the left, and the old industrial boiler room to the right.

Miller stepped silently, heel to toe, his weapon drawn at low-ready. From beyond the corrugated steel doors of the boiler room, a harsh, ragged whisper filtered through the vents.

“You should have signed the quitclaim deed, Claire. Nobody knows you’re down here. In two hours, the morning trash compactor runs.”

Miller’s jaw tightened. He moved to the threshold, peering through the small wire-reinforced window in the door.

Inside, illuminated only by a single hanging incandescent work bulb, stood a tall man in a dark canvas jacket and heavy work gloves. In his right hand, he held a heavy iron crowbar.

Slumped against a concrete pillar, her wrists bound behind her with thick industrial zip-ties and duct tape wrapped across her mouth, was a woman in a pale grey sweater. Her face was pale, her left cheek bruised, and her eyes wide with terror.

Claire.

Beside her feet, a shattered metal tool chest lay open. Several black legal folders and an external hard drive were stacked on a folding table near the suspect.

Miller pressed his shoulder against the door frame, took a deep breath, and kicked the lock with all his force.
