Chapter 5 - The Digital Footprint of Marcus Vance

By 3:30 AM, the apartment complex courtyard was illuminated by the flashing red and blue lights of six police cruisers, an ambulance, and a crime scene forensic van.
Paramedics gently wrapped Claire in a warm shock blanket, treating the lacerations on her wrists and providing oxygen inside the ambulance. Lily and Noah were brought down by a female officer, bundled in warm coats. The moment Lily saw her mother, the seven-year-old girl broke into a run, burying herself in Claire’s arms with tears of pure, unburdened relief.
“I didn't open the door, Mommy,” Lily sobbed into Claire’s neck. “I kept Noah quiet like you said.”
“You were so brave, my darling,” Claire wept, kissing her daughter’s face over and over. “You were so brave.”
Detective Sarah Vance of the Major Crimes Division arrived at the scene, joining Miller in the basement where forensic technicians were processing the boiler room.
On the folding table lay the evidence Marcus had tried to destroy:
A forged power-of-attorney document purporting to transfer Claire’s sole ownership of the family trust fund directly to Marcus.
A commercial lock-picking kit and a digital master key cloned from the building manager’s office.
A cellular frequency jammer designed to block mobile emergency calls within a fifty-foot radius.
“He planned this meticulously,” Detective Vance observed, bagging the frequency jammer. “He cut the breaker to lure her into the hallway, jammed her phone signal when she tried to call 911, and dragged her down the fire escape before she could reach the lobby.”

“What was the motive?” Miller asked.
Detective Vance pointed to the opened black folder. “A $450,000 life insurance policy and the deed to the children’s education trust. Marcus was drowning in debt. If Claire disappeared without a trace, he retained primary guardianship and full access to the funds.”
