Chapter 7 - The Interrogation Under Fluorescent Lights

At 8:00 AM, Marcus sat in an orange jumpsuit inside Interrogation Room 2 at the precinct, his wrists chained to the center of the steel table.
Senior Assistant District Attorney Karen Miller entered the room, tossing a thick evidence folder onto the metal surface with a sharp slap.
Marcus looked up, his face gaunt and pale, his former arrogance completely evaporated.
“You have nothing on me,” Marcus muttered defensively. “It was a domestic argument. Claire came down to the basement willingly to talk about our custody arrangement.”
Prosecutor Miller smiled coldly. She tapped the tablet on the table, linking it to the room's monitor.
The security camera feed from the second-floor stairwell played with crystal-clear 1080p resolution: it showed Marcus hiding in the shadows beside the fire door, lunging out with a rag soaked in chloroform, and dragging Claire down the stairs as she struggled desperately.
“You are charged with Aggravated Kidnapping, Attempted First-Degree Murder, Felony Child Endangerment, Utility Sabotage, and Interstate Wire Fraud,” Prosecutor Miller stated with absolute finality. “In the state of North Carolina, those charges carry a minimum sentence of thirty-five years without parole.”

Marcus stared at the screen, his jaw slacking, his hands trembling against the steel restraints.
The web of deceit he had spun had turned into an unbreakable iron cage.
