Chapter 6 - THE MAN WHO COULDN'T BUY FORGIVENESS

Enzo requested a meeting.
Clara refused.
He sent flowers.
She returned them.
He offered money.
She declined.
Finally, through her attorney, he sent a written apology.
It was short.
Direct.
And unlike anything Clara expected from him.
He admitted that he'd accused her without proof.
That he'd humiliated her.
That he'd physically assaulted her.
That nothing about the missing watch justified his behavior.
He acknowledged her right to pursue legal action.
Clara read the letter twice.
Then placed it on the table.
Her father watched quietly.
“What do you think?” he asked.
She looked down.
“I think he finally understands what he did.”
Salvatore nodded.
“Does that change anything?”
Clara shook her head.
“No.”
She looked toward the window.
“An apology doesn't make the bruise disappear.”
Her father smiled sadly.
“No.”
Clara continued.
“And I don't want him to think he can buy forgiveness.”
Salvatore took her hand.
“Then don't give it.”
She looked at him.
He smiled.
“You don't owe him anything.”
For the first time, Clara realized her father had changed.
Not completely.
Not overnight.

But enough to understand that love wasn't obedience.
And forgiveness wasn't something powerful men could demand.
