Chapter 3 - THE DAUGHTER WHO DISAPPEARED

Four years earlier, Lucia Vitale had disappeared from Sicily on the morning of her engagement party.

She had been twenty-four.

Her father had arranged for her to marry a powerful man named Marco Bellini.

The marriage would unite two influential families.

Everyone called it an honor.

Lucia called it a prison.

Marco was charming in public.

Polished.

Wealthy.

Respectful when her father was watching.

But in private, he was controlling.

Cruel.

And increasingly violent.

Lucia had tried to tell her father.

Salvatore had dismissed her concerns as wedding nerves.

Then one night, Marco grabbed her throat during an argument.

She escaped to her bedroom.

Packed a small bag.

Took cash she'd hidden for months.

And disappeared before dawn.

She changed her name.

Cut her hair.

Dyed it darker.

Crossed the Atlantic.

And built a new life in New York.

She never contacted her father.

Not because she didn't love him.

Because she believed he would send her back.

Now, four years later, she sat in a private hospital room with a bruised cheek and a bandage near her eyebrow.

Her father was on the phone.

And the man who had struck her was standing outside the door.

Salvatore spoke softly.

“Lucia.”

She closed her eyes.

“Yes?”

“I was wrong.”

Her breath caught.

He continued.

“I should have listened when you told me you were afraid.”

Tears slipped down her cheeks.

“Papa—”

“No.”

His voice trembled.

“I chose an alliance over my daughter's safety.”

Clara covered her mouth.

Salvatore continued.

“I cannot undo that.”

A long silence.

“But I can promise you this.”

She swallowed.

“What?”

“You will never be forced to return to Marco.”

Clara began crying.

For four years, she'd carried the fear that her father would choose power over her again.

Now, for the first time, she heard him choose her.
