Chapter 9 - THE EVIDENCE FIONA HID

Fiona contacted my attorney two weeks later.
She wanted to cooperate with investigators.
At first, I didn't want to hear her name.
I had spent too many nights imagining her wearing my husband's necklace.
But my attorney explained that Fiona possessed information relevant to the Hensley investigation.
So I agreed to a meeting.
Fiona arrived without makeup.
Without diamonds.
Without the polished confidence she'd worn at the Christmas party.
She looked exhausted.
“I owe you an apology,” she said.
I folded my arms.
“Yes.”
She swallowed.
“I knew Matthias was married.”
I stared.
“And pregnant?”
She nodded.
“I knew.”
I looked away.
She continued.
“I told myself it wasn't my responsibility.”
I looked back.
“It was your choice.”
She nodded.
“I know.”
For a moment, neither spoke.
Then Fiona opened her bag.
She removed a flash drive.
“This contains emails, meeting notes, and financial records.”
I stared.
“About the Hensley acquisition?”
“Yes.”
She swallowed.
“And about the plan to destroy the west wing.”
My attorney leaned forward.
“Have you provided copies to investigators?”
Fiona nodded.
“Yes.”
She looked at me.
“Serena, I didn't know how far Conrad was willing to go.”
I studied her.
“Neither did I.”
She looked down.
“I'm sorry.”
I took a breath.
“I believe you regret what happened.”
Her eyes filled.
“But I don't owe you forgiveness.”
May you like
She nodded.
“I understand.”
