Chapter 4 - THE WOMAN WEARING MY NECKLACE

Fiona Vale found me near the emergency medical vehicle.

She had wrapped a white fur coat around her shoulders.

The diamond necklace still glittered at her throat.

“Serena.”

I looked up.

She seemed nervous.

“Can we talk?”

I stared at her.

“About the necklace?”

Her face flushed.

“Please.”

I folded my arms.

“Go ahead.”

She glanced toward Matthias.

“He told me you were separated.”

I almost laughed.

“I'm thirty-two weeks pregnant with his daughter.”

“I know.”

“Then you knew he was married.”

She looked down.

“Yes.”

I swallowed.

At least she wasn't insulting me with another lie.

Fiona continued.

“He said the marriage was over.”

I looked toward the estate.

“Did he mention that to me?”

She said nothing.

I took a breath.

“Fiona, why are you really here?”

Her expression changed.

“What do you mean?”

“You handle communications for the Hensley acquisition.”

“Yes.”

“And you've been traveling with my husband.”

She nodded.

“Did you know about the contamination reports?”

She went pale.

I watched her carefully.

Nine years in emergency medicine had taught me to recognize when someone's body reacted before their words caught up.

Fiona swallowed.

“I found something.”

My heart pounded.

“What?”

She glanced toward the police.

“An email.”

“From whom?”

She hesitated.

“Conrad.”

I stared.

“What did it say?”

Fiona's voice dropped.

“That the west wing needed to be cleared before the investors arrived.”

I felt cold.

“Cleared?”

She nodded.

“And that Matthias was responsible for making sure nobody interfered.”

I looked toward my husband.

He was standing beside his father.

They were arguing.

Fiona whispered:

“Serena, I think Matthias knew something was going to happen tonight.”
