Chapter 12 - THE WOMAN WHO REBUILT HER LIFE

The divorce was finalized the following year.
Eliza was healthy.
I returned to nursing part-time.
And I moved into a small house near Westport.
It wasn't grand.
There were no marble floors.
No chandeliers.
No private security gates.
But there was sunlight in the kitchen.
A garden in the backyard.
And a little pink bedroom filled with books.
I loved it.
For the first time in years, I felt like my life belonged to me.
I also began volunteering with a community organization that supported families affected by environmental contamination.
The investigation into the Dre properties had revealed how many people had been harmed.
Children with chronic illnesses.
Families struggling with medical bills.
Homeowners unable to sell contaminated property.
People who had been ignored because they lacked money and influence.
I wanted to help.
So I did.
Evelyn joined the organization as an adviser.
Together, we worked with attorneys, medical professionals, and community leaders to connect families with resources.
It was difficult work.

But it mattered.
And for the first time since the Christmas party, I felt hopeful.
