Chapter 13 - THE MAN WHO CAME WITHOUT SECRETS

I met Daniel Hayes at a community health fundraiser.

He was forty-one.

A pediatrician.

Divorced.

The father of a twelve-year-old son named Noah.

He wore glasses, laughed easily, and had absolutely no interest in impressing wealthy people.

Our first conversation lasted twenty minutes.

We talked about children.

Healthcare.

Books.

And the terrible coffee being served at the event.

He made me laugh.

Really laugh.

It startled me.

I hadn't realized how long it had been.

When he asked for my number, I hesitated.

He noticed.

“No pressure,” he said.

I smiled.

“It's complicated.”

He nodded.

“Most worthwhile things are.”

I laughed.

Then gave him my number.

We started slowly.

Coffee.

Walks.

Lunch.

Long conversations.

Daniel never rushed me.

He respected my responsibilities as a mother.

And he understood that trust had to be earned.

When he met Eliza, she was almost two.

She immediately handed him a stuffed rabbit.

Daniel accepted it solemnly.

“Thank you, ma'am.”

Eliza giggled.

Then climbed into my lap.

I watched him.

For the first time in years, I felt something warm and unfamiliar.

Possibility.
