Chapter 6 - THE FATHER WHO BUILT AN EMPIRE ON LIES

Conrad Dre was taken into custody for questioning.

Investigators searched the estate.

The west wing was evacuated and secured.

Specialists examined the property for hazardous devices.

No explosion occurred.

But the investigation uncovered evidence that someone had prepared to destroy part of the building.

The discovery triggered a much larger inquiry into the Dre family's business operations.

Evelyn provided documents she had preserved for eleven years.

Environmental reports.

Property valuations.

Internal emails.

And correspondence showing that senior executives had concealed contamination at multiple development sites.

The Hensley acquisition was only the latest project.

Conrad had built an empire by buying distressed industrial properties, minimizing cleanup costs, and selling the land at inflated prices.

Families living near those sites had complained for years about strange odors, contaminated water, and unexplained illnesses.

Their concerns had been dismissed.

Some had been threatened with lawsuits.

Others had accepted settlements requiring confidentiality.

I thought about my work as a trauma nurse.

About the patients who arrived in emergency rooms frightened and confused.

About families who trusted institutions to protect them.

And about the possibility that my husband's family had knowingly placed entire neighborhoods at risk.

I felt sick.

Evelyn looked at me.

“I'm sorry.”

I shook my head.

“You didn't do this.”

She swallowed.

“I tried to stop it.”

May you like

I took her hand.

“And now you are.”
