Chapter 9 - THE FIRST TIME THEY CALLED HIM DADDY

Healing did not happen overnight.

The triplets continued working with their therapists.

Some days were good.

Some were difficult.

Sometimes Lily spoke a word.

Sometimes she didn't speak for days.

Noah began using short phrases during play.

Oliver preferred gestures.

Adrien learned to accept all of it.

One Saturday morning, he sat on the living-room floor building a wooden train track.

Noah handed him a curved piece.

Adrien tried to connect it.

It didn't fit.

Oliver pointed to another piece.

Adrien laughed.

“You're right. Daddy's terrible at this.”

Noah smiled.

Then whispered, “Daddy.”

Adrien froze.

He looked up.

Noah stared at him.

“Daddy.”

Adrien's eyes filled.

“I'm here.”

Noah reached for his hand.

Adrien took it.

Oliver crawled into his lap.

Lily leaned against his shoulder.

For a long time, nobody moved.

Evelyn stood in the doorway.

She watched Adrien hold his children.

He looked up at her.

His eyes were wet.

She smiled.

And quietly walked away.

This moment belonged to them.

Later, Adrien found her in the garden.

“Thank you.”

Evelyn looked at him.

“For what?”

He smiled faintly.

“For reminding me that silence isn't the same as absence.”

She nodded.

“They were always there.”

Adrien looked toward the house.

“I know.”

Then he turned back.

“And so were you.”

Evelyn's heartbeat quickened.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then Adrien reached for her hand.

She let him take it.
