Chapter 8 - THE SECRET INSIDE THE MUSIC BOX

The music box was found in Lily's closet.
It was small.
Silver.
Decorated with tiny blue flowers.
Adrien recognized it immediately.
Celeste had given it to Lily on her second birthday.
He hadn't seen it since the night she disappeared.
Evelyn discovered it while helping Lily choose pajamas.
The little girl froze when she saw the box.
Her eyes widened.
She backed away.
Evelyn stopped.
“Do you want me to put it away?”
Lily nodded.
Evelyn closed the closet.
But Lily began crying.
She pointed toward the box.
Then toward the door.
“Bad.”
Evelyn knelt.
“Okay.”
She didn't touch the box again.
Later, after the children were asleep, Evelyn told Adrien.
He contacted the investigators.
The box was examined.
Inside, beneath the musical mechanism, was a small digital storage device.
It contained audio recordings.
The first recording began with Celeste's voice.
“Stay quiet.”
A child's frightened breathing followed.
Then Celeste again.
“If you tell Daddy, he'll send you away.”
Adrien stopped the recording.
His hands trembled.
Evelyn stood beside him.
Neither spoke.
The recordings were turned over to investigators.
Specialists reviewed them carefully.
They appeared to document repeated threats and coercive behavior toward the children.
The investigation expanded.
That night, Adrien sat beside the triplets' beds.
He looked at their sleeping faces.
Noah.
Oliver.
Lily.
He had spent two years wondering why they wouldn't speak.
Now he understood something terrible.
They had not simply lost their voices.
Someone had taught them that speaking was dangerous.
May you like
Adrien covered his face.
And cried.
