Chapter 4 - THE DOOR BENEATH THE STAIRS

Adrien stood at the top of the basement staircase.

The door was locked.

That alone disturbed him.

He had owned the house for eleven years.

He had never authorized a lock on that door.

His security chief, Marco DeLuca, examined it.

“New hardware,” Marco said.

Adrien's expression darkened.

“How new?”

“Six months, maybe less.”

Evelyn stood several feet behind them.

She had insisted the children remain upstairs with a trusted family member.

Adrien had agreed.

Now he looked at the door.

“Open it.”

Marco used the house's maintenance key.

The lock turned.

The door swung inward.

Cold air rose from below.

Adrien descended first.

Evelyn followed at a distance.

The basement was enormous.

Wine storage.

A private theater.

A climate-controlled archive.

And at the far end, another door.

Steel.

Windowless.

Locked.

Marco looked at Adrien.

“Sir?”

Adrien stared.

“I've never seen that.”

Evelyn felt cold.

Marco opened the second door.

Inside was a small room.

A narrow bed.

A chair.

A shelf.

A camera mounted above the doorway.

And three faded blankets folded against the wall.

One blue.

One green.

One white.

Adrien stopped breathing.

The blankets were children's blankets.

He recognized them.

Celeste had purchased them before the triplets were born.

Evelyn looked at the bed.

Then the camera.

Then the marks scratched into the wall.

Three sets of tiny lines.

At different heights.

Adrien stepped inside.

“What is this?”

Nobody answered.

He turned toward Marco.

“Who built this room?”

Marco looked shaken.

“I don't know.”

Adrien's voice dropped.

“Find out.”

Upstairs, Lily began crying when she saw her father.

Not because he frightened her.

Because he was holding the white blanket.

She ran toward him.

Stopped.

Then reached for it.

Adrien knelt.

“Is this yours, baby?”

Lily nodded.

His throat tightened.

“Were you downstairs?”

She froze.

Evelyn touched Adrien's shoulder.

“Don't push.”

He looked at her.

She continued softly.

“She has already told us enough to know we need professionals involved.”

Adrien closed his eyes.

He nodded.

That evening, Adrien contacted an independent child protection specialist and his attorneys.

The hidden room was documented.

The security system was preserved.

The children were evaluated by professionals experienced in childhood trauma.

And Mrs. Weller was removed from caregiving duties pending investigation.

But the most disturbing discovery came after midnight.

Marco entered Adrien's office carrying a tablet.

“Sir.”

Adrien looked up.

“What?”

Marco swallowed.

“The cellar camera was connected to an outside server.”

Adrien went still.

“Whose?”

Marco hesitated.

Then answered.

“Celeste Belandi.”

Adrien stared at him.

May you like

His wife had vanished two years earlier.

And somehow, someone had been watching the children from a hidden room beneath his own house.
